Marvelous Michigan Musicians! Join me in celebrating a weekend with Madonna and Spencer LaJoye
Episode Description
One performer was at the United Center in Chicago. One was in a cottage at a rural Christian camp in Southwest, Michigan. Both were raised in the best state in the midwest.
My wife, my friend Elvira, and I had the opportunity to see Madonna at the United Center. It was a sensory overload celebration of 40 years of joy, and in some cases poignant memories, through the decades. We waited three hours, but when she went on…..damn….she’s still got it! From a moving AIDS memorial to stuff that made my prudish side cringe, I had a lifetime concert experience.
If that wasn’t enough excitement for one weekend, my son and I hopped in the car the next morning (I had a hangover – not from alcohol but from starting a concert at 10 p.m. when my new normal bedtime is 9) and drove to Sawyer, Michigan for an equally inspiring and moving concert with singer/songwriter/musician Spencer LaJoye. Spencer is by far the best loop artist I have ever witnessed. My son and my friend Diane join me in this episode to share that concert with you.

I’m excited to reignite the BBBQ Podcast with a live recording from the Wild Goose Festival on July 14, 2023. My guest, Spencer LaJoye, is a folk/pop singer songwriter, violinist, and vocal loop artist in Boston, MA, who believes everyone is made of the good stuff. A 2021 Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Competition winner, LaJoye (luh-JOY) makes music to tell the truth and return to their body as a queer person in recovery from American Christian evangelicalism. Delivering Broadway-esque melodies accompanied by a weathered dreadnought, their performances are equal parts confident quirk and elegant storytelling.
